Conceived and coordinated by Nam June Paik as a rebuttal to Orwell's dystopian view of 1984, this "global interactive satellite television event" was broadcast live on American and French television on New Year's day, 1984. The event featured simultaneous performances at WNET/13 in New York and Centre Pompidou in Paris by participants including Laurie Anderson, Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Allan Ginsberg, Joseph Beuys and Pierre-Alain Hubert. Paik designed the video graphics and effects that connected the various live and pre-recorded segments.
